gettin' better
So things are getting somewhat better as I heal up. As you can see, I'm not quite so hamburger-ized this week:
But I also got this hard cast on yesterday which, while it's definitely a stylin' shade of blue, is not removable like my hospital splint was. I'm sure it's for the best, the bones need to be protected and all, but I'm in for three weeks of scratchy, sweaty, no-shoe-tying irritation.
The doc did say I could ride a bike ("carefully!") and with no ability to shift or brake on the right hand, I gamely rode my fixed-gear up to the train station today. It was quite a relief to be back on a bike, and I felt pretty safe, but something just wasn't feeling right. After the ride back home from downtown San Jose in the evening, my wrist was hurting a bit and a couple of sketchy moments gave me reason to decide that it's just not worth the risk of further injury.
But I do need to get exercise somehow -- I can tell that my body and brain miss the daily endorphins because I'm cranky, craving sugar worse than normal (!!), and finding it hard to get to sleep at night. So it's probably back to running for a while, which should make Laswell happy - he loves a good run like a kid loves cannonballing into a pool. (See exhibit b)
The bike's in at the shop. Terry said he's going to attenpt to cold-set the forks back into position and examine the fork-crown lug for signs of creasing or weakness. Hopefully it'll be fine, though (on advice from someone who oughtta know) it might be worth getting Roland Della Santa to braze me up a new one anyway -- maybe this time with "lawyer lips", just in case.
I'm pretty sad about missing out on the Tierra Bella ride this weekend, as I'm all paid up and was really looking forward to the climbs around Uvas Reservoir, but life goes on. There'll be time without pushing my poor wrist before it's ready.
Right?

I took it easy, at least while racing, for a couple of weeks. Like you said, no point in more injuries.
Maybe a trackstand-style trainer would be a help. I have few friends who've used trainers to maintain some level of fitness while they were nursing broken bones.
Personally, I think I'd take a couple of weeks to explore something new. Good luck with it... hope you continue to heal up well!
